We have a SRP for blocking exe files from USB drives / user drives and other shared storage areas. This all works fine apart from .mdb files.

From the Designated File Types we have removed the following,

  • mdb
  • ade
  • adp
  • mde

This still generates an error saying the policy has blocked the .mdb file from being opened with a double click. However, opening MS Access first and then selecting the .mdb file or right-clicking on it and choosing Open With both work.

Have we missed another file extension that needs to be removed from Designated File Types or is this just a quirk of SRP.

Although I can't think of any reason why it still doesn't work...

I will drop in the 2 cents that ever since moving to Access 2003, we've pestered our IT Teachers to open Access and go File > Open

Reason being, if we didn't, it would end up corrupting tables and "Disk or Network Errors", once we opened from within Access it was all happy.

NB: You could possibly add an allow rule, which I think would circumvent the issue...

You need to add a *.mdb to the allowed list, it's simply broken and always has been, even when it's not specifically blocked!
