I've been running a part-time support business from a couple of years now in my spare time, if you don't envisage earning a lot (less than £5000 for the current tax year ending April 2010) or it's irregular work as a business on the side of your day job you can register for a Small Earnings Exemption Certificate for National Insurance, at least at the start to keep costs down. This, because I'm already paying normal Class 1 NI contributions through PAYE in my 9-5 job, allows me to be exempt from paying the usual Class 2 NI contributions that a self-employed person would normally have to pay. Although it doesn't sound much of a saving at only a couple of pounds a week it's better in your pocket than the governments. Enquire about it when you register as a sole-trader, here's the link to the form:

15 years later, the OP is probably living off the fat proceeds of their hustle - assuming so as they haven’t posted for 13 years.
