Is anyone else finding things really slow this morning?

 

My hosting service is down, Edugeek's crawling, and even the BBC are struggling, yet our provider doesn't report any problems at their end...

 

Is anyone else out of my little MK area struggling?

Average 30 secs to load up new page on edugeek. Everywhere else I've been pretty instant.

We know slowness of the site is an issue and we are currently working on solutions to sort this.

 

We are planning to do some overhauls over summer to sort spped etc so please do bear with us..

Does anyone really use the "User Info", "Coppermine Stats", "Members blog" boxes on the left and right? I know I don't and that would probably speed it up a bit.

Edugeek's slow, but better for me than it was, other sites are improving

 

My personal site hosting bods are still not back online (no giraffeonastick, boo!); any more downtime and they'll be in contradiction of their 99.9% uptime claims..

 

 

There are bits of this site (like the Coppermine stats) that I never take any notice of. What about a poll Russ to work out which areas are useful to people and which aren't?

I can imagine there's a LOT of SQL querying going on in the BG, a lot of template processing, and with a DB of this size it all starts to add up.

True There is lot of background proccess if we remove something it will be along with other stuff we do.

 

As said this is going to part of bigger project to increase sites spped..

You could see if your site host allows/has a PHP acclerator. I implemented it on our moodle box here in school and it's helped enourmously.

Just a thought. Seeing as the forums are the most popular / used part of the site, how about hosting the forums on a seperate host with is own domain. http://www.edugeekforums.net for example.

a subdomain would be more sensible surely? No point in buying an extra domain name when you don't need one. eg,

What's this PHP accellerator dooberry about then?

 

How do i go about installing it on an ubuntu box. Is there an apt-get package for it??

Turck MMCache is what I use.

It basically caches the interpreted PHP pages. So if you get a lot of people staring at the same content then the web server doesn't have to keep rerunning PHP. Saves a lot of CPU time but will munch ram.
