SIMs Manager Training

Guys - your thoughts please.

 

I am just about to start at a Secondary School as the IS Manager. I have no SIMs knowledge and the only Capita Training I can see a SIMs Systems Manager course for one day. The course seems to start at 10am and finish at 3pm. I think that includes lunch so not many hours of training for a newbie. Is this the type of training everyone has done? Can you recommend something else which is 2 or more days of in-depth training? BTW the school is a forces school in Germany so no LEA support/training available.

System support, yes, easily withing 5 hours, everything else is learn on the go (Sims looks scary but isnt really )

If its the same course I went on they'll pretty much go through the technical workings of sims including backup/recovery and full installation. Then they'll also go through the System manager interface showing you how to assign users to groups and create custom groups.

 

If its the actual workings of sims rather than the technical side your after they usually offer courses for most modules and a few on reporting etc, I would probably go for Assessment manager training and advanced reporting along with Nova T6(4 days!) if you have to deal with those modules. Most of the other modules are easier to pick up as you go.

Download and read as much as you can from capita's docs and browse all support kb's on system manager to give you a good grounding.

Also, assuming you're on March release, in SIMS, click on Documentation on homepage and click System Administration & Technical for handbooks.

That should get you going.

We had Capita come out and running a training course during the last break. It was two days - one day looked at the basics of SIMS and the other day was all about system manager.

 

The course started at 8am and finished at 4pm on both days and was very very useful.

 

Lots of hints / tips and printed guides for keeps.
