I have Joomla 1.5.10 (I think, latest one anyway) NOT running on legacy mode.

 

I use the following extentions (all free)

yup just went down, not sure why yet but it has been working fine for a week and a half and I haven't touched it... Backends fine just the front end...

Yep sites down, however it was working last night. If you do work out what is wrong i would love to know what the problem was.

It's odd...

 

So far..

Checked the DB Access which is - fine

Checked the DB - fine

Checked subdomains on same host - fine

Checked support sites of the extentions - fine

Checked support sites of the host - fine

Looking into the permissions - fine

 

Looking into uploading to subdomain, so i can start uninstalling extentions

Looking at installing another template to check that....

 

 

other than that I'm at a loss and may have to use a backup...

I absolutely hate sites which don't allow you to right click - and I tend to leave and never go back.

 

Most to do it so that people can't right click and save images, but the average user knows how to get at them through the source code or by making a screenshot.

 

So, apart from that, you're stopping your users from using the right click menu completely. So, using a souped up Firefox, in my case, you're stopping me from going back, forward, refreshing, bookmaking the page on Delicious, highlighting a postcode and locating your school on Google Maps, choosing where I want to save a download... Do you really want to stop your users from doing any of those things?

 

Might be worth reconsidering.

I use ChronoForms, but it's not particularly user friendly, so I'll have to check JForms out. Did you try ChronoForms and, if so, how do they compare? Thanks.

 

Hope you get your site back and running soon mossj - I've not had a chance to look at it yet, and it'll be interesting to see how you've implemented some of your ideas.

Just got this from the helpfull support

 

There are lot of these entries in your error_log:

It looks like this is what is causing the site to go down. Any idea how to fix?

I could be (very) wrong, but that sounds to me like there's a rogue '<' character in your index.php which the error log is picking up every time the page is accessed - I very much doubt that'll be a reason for your site to go down, but it'd be worth removing it.

 

Try running it through a validator or maybe just searching the text for '<<' in case the character's been doubled up somewhere by mistake.

It's back, I LOVE CSNEWMEDIA support! For whatever reason teh index.php on the root had broken, so i just uploaded a copy from the back up. I doubt it was a rouge '<' as I have never touched index.php and noone else gets that error...

 

will have to turn on all the seo friendly urls again though

I think I tried chronoforms but to tell the truth i can't remember why I uninstalled it...

 

I can tell you Jforms does the following (maybe I'll list a feature chronoforms doesn't have...)

- email & database support

- Drag and drop creation interface

- Captcha

- NO advertising or Hidden links

As al All Girls School we take whatever precautions are available to protect our students, if we could stop the taking of screenshots - we would

 

We have a Google map available on the site and any internal downloads open as pdfs.

Surely it's the same weather its a all boys/girls or mixed, I think many users take offence at the 'no right click' ness, and surely you shouldn't be posting pictures that you wouldn't want getting into the wrong hands.

 

p.s I HATE no right click as I can't open new tabs on links (something I do on almost every site i visit)

Main ones i use are Google Maps Component, Zoom Media Gallery and Events Calendar apart from that its pretty much the default ones. Saying this i am working on a new site and making it snazzy with plenty of extensions like the RokSlideshow extension so hopefully that'll be up and running soon .

How could I forget that one?

 

I'd seriously recommend re-enabling the right click. Admittedly I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to usability, but I just think it's madness to stop a user from doing something they can do on 99% of other websites. People use the right click menu far more than you probably realise.

 

As for extensions I use - they've all been listed already, apart from eXtplorer and News Highlighter GK1.

Surely if you desprately wanted to open the links in a new tab then you can just hold down ctrl and click the link...hey presto new tab

Except not everybody knows that. If users need (or think they need) to right click on a website, but can't, then are they going to Google a shortcut or go exploring their browser menus for another way, or just give up? Unfortunately, it's more likely to be the latter, and you've just lost your user.

 

Not a dig at Kamran7860 or alan-d by any means, but I don't think disabling the right click carries a single significant advantage.

Wow quite a response. I work for a private girl’s school and the management have insisted on this being implemented. However what I have done is links going to Webmail, Moodle and other external resources etc automatically open in a new tab. I thought this would be a good compromise as I my self am very heavy tab user. I haven’t had any problems with Google maps or any downloadable content. However site isn’t finished yet so still up for review.

What i learnt with web site design is you have to make everything as easy as possible, if you don't people will just ignore your site....

 

we had an old site that was difficult to navigate and its bouce rate was 85%. The new slipstreamed site is down to 35- 40%

 

Disabling Right click is a annoyance that 90% of people take offence to...

I made a wiki page for people to input what extentions they use etc (its linked from the edugeek Joomla package page).

 

But for what ever reason I can't edit it to add/change its formating (its pretty shoddy atm)
