I use the following extentions (all free) COMPONENTS Comment System - Chronocomment Calender System - JEvents MVC Forms System - JForms Sitemap (with google linked) - Joomap Download handling/listing - Remository Slideshows - RSGallery2 PLUGINS Rating System - VOTITALY Map System - Google Maps Analytics - Google BIGshot SEO - SEOgenerator MODULES Analytics - JX Woopra Directions (too school) - Google Simple Route Additional Slideshow - Rokslideshow Menu - EXmenu All are hacked to remove any unwanted links or hidden and nofollow. Checked the DB Access which is - fine Checked the DB - fine Checked subdomains on same host - fine Checked support sites of the extentions - fine Checked support sites of the host - fine Looking into the permissions - fine Looking into uploading to subdomain, so i can start uninstalling extentions Looking at installing another template to check that.... other than that I'm at a loss and may have to use a backup... So, using a souped up Firefox, in my case, you're stopping me from going back, forward, refreshing, bookmaking the page on Delicious, highlighting a postcode and locating your school on Google Maps, choosing where I want to save a download... Do you really want to stop your users from doing any of those things? Might be worth reconsidering. Forms System - JForms I use ChronoForms, but it's not particularly user friendly, so I'll have to check JForms out. Did you try ChronoForms and, if so, how do they compare? Thanks. mossj Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Just got this from the helpfull support There are lot of these entries in your error_log: [Thu Apr 23 11:05:50 2009] [error] [client 195.225.189.10] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in /var/www/vhosts/ashlawn.org.uk/httpdocs/index.php on line 89 It looks like this is what is causing the site to go down. Any idea how to fix?
fernt Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I could be (very) wrong, but that sounds to me like there's a rogue '<' character in your index.php which the error log is picking up every time the page is accessed - I very much doubt that'll be a reason for your site to go down, but it'd be worth removing it. Try running it through a validator or maybe just searching the text for '<<' in case the character's been doubled up somewhere by mistake.
mossj Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 (edited) It's back, I LOVE CSNEWMEDIA support! For whatever reason teh index.php on the root had broken, so i just uploaded a copy from the back up. I doubt it was a rouge '<' as I have never touched index.php and noone else gets that error... will have to turn on all the seo friendly urls again though I use ChronoForms, but it's not particularly user friendly, so I'll have to check JForms out. Did you try ChronoForms and, if so, how do they compare? Thanks. I think I tried chronoforms but to tell the truth i can't remember why I uninstalled it... As al All Girls School we take whatever precautions are available to protect our students, if we could stop the taking of screenshots - we would We have a Google map available on the site and any internal downloads open as pdfs. Do you really want to stop your users from doing any of those things? In an ideal world of course not - but it isn't is it?

Saying this i am working on a new site and making it snazzy with plenty of extensions like the RokSlideshow extension so hopefully that'll be up and running soon .

I'd seriously recommend re-enabling the right click. Admittedly I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to usability, but I just think it's madness to stop a user from doing something they can do on 99% of other websites. People use the right click menu far more than you probably realise. As for extensions I use - they've all been listed already, apart from eXtplorer and News Highlighter GK1.

If users need (or think they need) to right click on a website, but can't, then are they going to Google a shortcut or go exploring their browser menus for another way, or just give up? Unfortunately, it's more likely to be the latter, and you've just lost your user. Not a dig at Kamran7860 or alan-d by any means, but I don't think disabling the right click carries a single significant advantage.

However what I have done is links going to Webmail, Moodle and other external resources etc automatically open in a new tab. I thought this would be a good compromise as I my self am very heavy tab user. I haven’t had any problems with Google maps or any downloadable content. However site isn’t finished yet so still up for review.
mossj Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 (edited) What i learnt with web site design is you have to make everything as easy as possible, if you don't people will just ignore your site.... we had an old site that was difficult to navigate and its bouce rate was 85%. The new slipstreamed site is down to 35- 40% Disabling Right click is a annoyance that 90% of people take offence to... Edited April 23, 2009 by mossj
