Helping out one of our staff members, they have purchased office 2008 for their macbook air.

Which doesn't have a cd/dvd drive, as you probably know. I have tried putting the Apple office 2008 disk into a PC and share it out, but the pc doesn't seem to recognise the disk?

Not that familiar with macs, Any suggestions?

Cheers

Only way really to do that is to find a mac, with which you can "share" the CD drive wirelessly. I must admit I've heard rumblings about being able to do the same via a PC but not actually seen it yet. Mostly as I avoid anyone having bought an Air, mind :D

As far asa I know there is no specific need for it to be presented to the OS as a DVD to install it so you should be able to just share it normally even off a windows computer then access it via SMB and install from there. Its just a bunch of files, of course it would be worth telling them they need to buy the appropriate mac external DVD drive aswell just to see the look on their faces and illustraite the costs of mac.

if you disable the firewall on the mac ( assuming its enabled - which is in the security section of system prefs ) and enable windows sharing which is under the sharing prefs in system prefs - does that help at all ?

Id never get a mac book air - if I wanted a laptop id go with a mac book or mac book pro :)

Simples tsk

Hi

You should be able to download Office 2008 for mac as an ISO image directly to the mac itself from Microsoft's website. This was done approx 4-6 month ago at a site I support.

Once downloaded simply double-clicking on the image should 'mount' it as a virtual drive. Install from there.

I haven't tried this yet since I don't have any Mac formatted CDs to hand, but I think you could also access the disk using a PC running Linux, and then share the drive out from the Linux box. This should even be possible using Linux under Virtual PC if you don't have a spare machine to reformat.

Another way to do it on the PC is to create an ISO image of the disc using ImgBurn and then copy that over to the Mac via the network. Since it creates an exact image of the disc you don't need to install MacDrive. Edited by Arthur
