flashsnaps Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Helping out one of our staff members, they have purchased office 2008 for their macbook air. Which doesn't have a cd/dvd drive, as you probably know. I have tried putting the Apple office 2008 disk into a PC and share it out, but the pc doesn't seem to recognise the disk? Not that familiar with macs, Any suggestions? Cheers
synaesthesia Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Only way really to do that is to find a mac, with which you can "share" the CD drive wirelessly. I must admit I've heard rumblings about being able to do the same via a PC but not actually seen it yet. Mostly as I avoid anyone having bought an Air, mind
matt40k Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Buy a USB drive DVD-RW drive. Never tried making a network install of the Mac version of Office... could try.
SYNACK Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 As far asa I know there is no specific need for it to be presented to the OS as a DVD to install it so you should be able to just share it normally even off a windows computer then access it via SMB and install from there. Its just a bunch of files, of course it would be worth telling them they need to buy the appropriate mac external DVD drive aswell just to see the look on their faces and illustraite the costs of mac.
pooley Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 install "macdrive" on the windows pc to allow windows to recognise the osx formatted cd. Then share it. Should work.
flashsnaps Posted April 5, 2009 Author Posted April 5, 2009 Ok cool, I'll give it a go - thanks for your input!
FN-GM Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Another option could be to use macdrive and then copy the contents onto a USB pen then install off the pen drive.
synaesthesia Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 *makes note of macdrive* cheers folks always useful.
mac_shinobi Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 if you disable the firewall on the mac ( assuming its enabled - which is in the security section of system prefs ) and enable windows sharing which is under the sharing prefs in system prefs - does that help at all ? Id never get a mac book air - if I wanted a laptop id go with a mac book or mac book pro Simples tsk
AntonioRocco Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Hi You should be able to download Office 2008 for mac as an ISO image directly to the mac itself from Microsoft's website. This was done approx 4-6 month ago at a site I support. Once downloaded simply double-clicking on the image should 'mount' it as a virtual drive. Install from there. Antonio Rocco (ACSA)
AngryTechnician Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 I haven't tried this yet since I don't have any Mac formatted CDs to hand, but I think you could also access the disk using a PC running Linux, and then share the drive out from the Linux box. This should even be possible using Linux under Virtual PC if you don't have a spare machine to reformat.
Arthur Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 (edited) Another way to do it on the PC is to create an ISO image of the disc using ImgBurn and then copy that over to the Mac via the network. Since it creates an exact image of the disc you don't need to install MacDrive. Edited April 9, 2009 by Arthur
