Hi everyone

Hopefully this is the most appropriate forum for this thread.

At the moment at our school we are looking at how we can integrate our ICT services so that everything is tighter and easier to use for students and staff. For example we would like to use the least amount of user names and passwords to access systems as possible.

We are running a microsoft active directory environment, SIMS for our MIS, the county supplied OWA mail system as our internal email system, which we have no control over at all and Moodle (hosted externally) for our VLE. As you can imagine user management is a nightmare.

My plans at the moment are to install our own internal email system and also host our VLE internally. It would be interesting to hear how everyone else integrates their systems and services together.

Look forward to reading your responses. :D

Using AD to manage all users for everything except SIMS. VLE hosted internally on Sharepoint, email and calendaring handled by Exchange server (also internal). This means that we will have one logon for everything (again, apart from SIMS). Once the VLE is fully functional it will be accessible from home, again with the same logon. Those staff who need access to our VPN also use their same AD logons - the VPN concentrator we have simply hooks into AD - we created a group of 'VPN allowed' users for it to reference. Hope that helps.

At the moment? We have the following potential usernames:

1. Windows network

2. County Email

3. County Intranet

4. SIMS.net

5. FMSSQL (finance and my boss only)

6. Phone System

7. VLE (only if you're not a teacher, as teachers integrate with the MLE provided by our LEA, which uses the county email details)

All new systems implemented by me are integrated into the active directory.

I intend to integrate SIMS.net into the AD at some point soon also. And the County is working on integrating their Intranet with the Email AD servers.

Thanks for the reply.

Are you services integrated into a portal type interface for easy access?

Well, depends what you mean? We have a simple intranet page which has links to the various systems. But everyone has to log in various times, with the same details.

  • Thanks 1
