I've got 2 external HD's that I need to wipe, but I would like a more secure way than using the standard windows format.

Does anyone currently use any software to do this?

( Preferably free :D )

Try the latest Hirens.

Think the site is hirens.info

should be on 9.7 now.

Download the ISO, burn it to a CD, bang it in on reboot and use one of the HDD erasing tools on there. FDisk usually does the job, but have a read up.

That disc is worth it's weight in gold!

9.8 is out with some more handy addons :D

Cheers for the update. I'd be lost without Hirens!

Installed SteadyState on a few laptops yesterday and some nice pupil had somehow changed the admin password and then created themselves a new passworded account.

Needless to say I Hirens'd its ass!...now they can't so much as fart at the thing!

If you have to do it in Windows, you could run the following command from the command prompt.

CIPHER /W:X:

(where X: is the drive letter of the disk you want to wipe).

Since cipher.exe only wipes free space make sure you do a quick format beforehand.

For internal drives I would normally use DBAN though.
