Latitude D505 (*sigh*) battery problem

Recommended Posts

I have a D505 that will not charge the battery and only lasts for 10 mins on battery power.

I have tried a known good battery, and also a new one with the same result

Computer works fine on AC power

Can I really presume that the charging circuit on the mobo is carked or is there anything else I can do to check?

I don't relish telling the powers that be that yet another laptop has died so I want to be really sure before I do

I am not sure about D505, but with most D series Latitude notebooks you can normally check by booting into BIOS if they have recognised the charger and are charging the battery.

I hate to say it, but the older Dell laptops are prone to this. I've had no less than 14 D510 laptops die on me since September, all with the same fault as you're describing. The only fix seems to be a new motherboard at a cost of about £100 a unit.

We are still fixing them in-house until the end of this year, then as they die they will be scrapped in our school.

Silly question, but you don't say if you have tried a different charger? Also do both batteries charge fine in another laptop?

Sorry, yes I have tried another charger and both batteries are fine in another laptop

Hi

Do you have more than one d505 if you do then put the battery into another and see if it works ok in that. I have had some problems with chargers, batteries and motherboards with regards to charging. I think off the top of my head the d505's were the ones where there was a product recall on some batteries.

Good Luck
