Packetfence - baffled

Hi,

 

I fancy having a crack at Packetfence and wondered if anyone could answer me some questions.

 

1) Can you run it without managed switches or can you run it with limited managed switches. I ask this as I have some boarders who access the network and I could put a few decent switches where they are and I have managed ones at the core.

 

2) Can it run happily on VMware, how does it cope with NICs on it?

 

3) Anyone used the vmware appliance?

 

4) How hard is it to configure, I am a nix novice so I need it to e simple.... it seems alot harder than smoothwall which I did a few years ago.
