Tony_Mc Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 So we have a couple of Vista business lappys for my tech and me. sims.... OK, so I have tried to install sims, I have the mapped drive, everything looks right yet i get this error. "SIMS installer was unable to write to the SIMS application shared directory supplied "S:\sims". " I am baffled. Help!

BatchFile Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 (edited) don't ask me why (though if anyone wants to tell my why....) but when you run simsinst on vista you have to put the unc path to the setups folder rather than S:\sims\setups. it works then. at least it does here! Also, when you have got it installed, remember to relax the security on c:\program files\sims\sims .net to allow connect.ini to update correctly the first time it's run Apart from that, it's pretty straightforward Edited March 18, 2009 by BatchFile 1

I was curious, so went away to install it on my office PC (which i've just reimaged recently - Vista Business etc!). Went in without any problem at all! Actually, I say no problem at all, I still can't open System Manager which is quite annoying (but overcomable for me as I have two other computers next to me!)

If it's the same "undocumented feature" as I encounter here - Yes you can! - it's pretty perculiar. Then, when it gets to the 16-bit bit at the end you have to change the path back to s:\sims\setups - it prompts you because that bit of installer is from windows 3.1 so doesn't understand the UNC path:bored:
techyphil Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I fixed this problem following what a member on here said. I need to dig it up. It's because of a folder that was created in the sims directory called 2a982a3d94629adhagdad89a7sd or something. Just delete that and it should work. I couldn't install Sims for years and capita couldn't figure it out. But after deleting that folder, it worked. Sorry I don't know the exact folder name, only that it's a long string of randomness. 1
