Here are the settings of the SMTP virtual server: Authentication: checked anonymous access checked Integrated Windows Authentication Relay restrictions: selected only the list below (the list contain my server's ip addr only) checked Allow all computers which successfully authenticated for relay to relay, regardless of the list above Connection: selected only the list below (the list contain my server's ip addr only) I have checked the port 25 is unblocked and the following Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail in the categories of Anti-Virus Standard Protection in anti-virus is unchecked. I am wondering how can I configure the SMTP that can allow to send and receive email to outside. Thanks!

pooley Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Can you telnet out and in on port 25? Have you an external DNS forwarder? i.e. can you nslookup gmail.com and get a response? What does the queue say in exchange manager about the undeliverable messages?

No, I do not have an external DNS. What does the queue say in exchange manager about the undeliverable messages? I am using windows server 2003. When I tried to send an email to outside with outlook express, an error "This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification. Delivery to the following recipients failed." is occured.

Zorba Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Hi In a rush earlier so forgive my first post. I have some questions. I assume this is a new exchange server? 1. Is the NIC configured correctly with static IP and DNS pointing to DC in your domain with DNS forwarders correctly configured? 2. Have you specified the correct default gateway? 3. Do you have a public IP for the mail server and an associated DNS record? If so you should be able to use nslookup on both name and ip and get a valid response. If you fail here I would say you need to speak to your ISP. I will give you our set up as an example. Our MX record is held by redprotect.co.uk. We have been assisigned a public IP starting 193.164. Our mail server has a DNS record of mail.domainname.city.sch.uk. Our mail is delivered to Redstones mail server and forwarded to our mail server. The public IP 193. is forwared by our PIX to the mail server on our LAN. When I perform an nslookup on the name or public ip they both resolve correctly. Having performed the checks above can you resolve your public ip/dns name using nslookup? 1

pooley Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Can you telnet out and in on port 25? Both cannot. Umm if you cannot telnet out or telnet to your box on port 25 then you wont be able to send or receive mail. You need to open this port in your firewall.

I have contacted the administrator of school. He suggested me to use another email server which he provided for me. And now, I can send email out.
