I'd try the folowing, checking to see if that Font already exists on the machine, if it does remove it.

I'd also be looking at the media and the opticle drive.

media and drive are fine.

The USB dongle? Maybe it's not getting enough power? Don't some laptops have a dodgy USB system whereby there's only one actual USB port, acting as a hub, and the rest are actually child ports of that hub? Or could the laptop just not be providing enough power to the USB port simply because it's a laptop?

HI

What I would do is start at the beginning:

Check for viruses, spyware, and hardware problems.

I have just had this second a computer that would crash but all the hardware appeared ok but I had to change the cd drive to get it to work.

You could also try and share a cd drive on the network and install it from there.

Lastly does the laptop come up to the minimum spec for the software.

Just an idea.

Installation hangs while copying the "stein__.ttf" fileIn rare cases the installation of the sequencer hangs on Windows while copying the "stein__.ttf" font. Please cancel the installation and start Windows in safe mode*. Now retry the installation of Cubase or Nuendo. After the installation has been successfully completed, please restart Windows without using the safe mode option.

*The safe mode can be chosen after hitting [F8] while Windows starts its boot sequence. Select "Safe Mode" from the now appearing "Windows Advanced Options Menu".

More information on the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" can be found in the Microsoft knowledge base.

I didnt know cubase used a dongle.

Yep, it does. We tried to order a network version of the software but there doesn't seem to be one - we simply got 20 boxes of Cubase Essential, each with its own USB dongle and extensive packaging.

Yep - its a pain that one. We ordered it for 2 suites, and wondered why a massive box arrived. We only needed one copy of the media, manuals, and all the dongles! Grrr... so much packaging. Why cant they do a proper network version like Sibelius??

and the students see these "usb dongles" and think that they will nick them not realising what they are and how much they cost!

Indeed - the USB stick basically is your copy of Cubase. An idea: you can get internal USB header to standard USB port converters, probably worth installing one of those inside the case of the machines with Cubase on to take the USB dongle. Some machines these days even come with internal USB ports, but I've only seen those on our Dell servers so far.

I know this is not the best solution but you could fit the machines with a pci USB card that has an internal USB port on on it, there are a lot of 5 port cards that have 4 external ports and 1 internal. That way you can at least keep the dongle away from sticky fingers.
