Macbook on home XP network

Hey guys, i need some help.

 

I've just bought a macbook and i want to be able to access files on my computer at home. Its on a workgroup and the folder is shared on the network and can be seen by other computers in the house but i don't know how to access it from my mac.

 

Any help???

Open Finder then the computer should be visible on Shared on the left-hand side of the Finder window. I am fairly new to macs myself but that is how I do it.

Mac OS X 10.1 or later: How to Connect to Windows File Sharing (SMB)

 

Follow these steps:

Click the Finder icon in the Dock.

Choose Connect to Server from the Go menu (see Note 1).

In the address field of the Connect to Server dialog, type the URL using this syntax (see Note 3):

 

smb://ServerName/ShareName/

 

 

Click Connect.

 

 

You will be prompted for the workgroup, user name, and password. In addition to connecting to actual Microsoft Windows computers, you may also use the Connect to Server dialog to connect to a Macintosh that is offering Windows File Sharing.

Thanks for the tutorial. When i open up 'finder' i don't have a 'network' section on the left and the pc isn't there

Finder->Preferences->Sidebar .... check "bonjour computers"

Yup.. everything in there is ticked. I've tried turning my firewall off aswell

go to your desktop and use the Go menu --> connect to server

 

The above way should allow you to connect to your windows machine via smb as per synacks comment

 

Also the username and password between both accounts on your mac and your windows computer ( from what im aware needs to both be the same ) so the smb side works.

 

Also you may be able to do this in a reverse way if you go to system preferences --> sharing --> file sharing

 

Add a folder to be shared in there and give it the relevant rights ( read and write ) and then you may be able to do it from the windows side.

I had issues with Norton Internet Security when sharing like that, had to use the removal tool on a PC as the firewall sometimes seems to persist even after uninstallation! Had a lot of experience of that as I used to work at PC World shame on me!

 

You can also try Go->Connect to server then type

 

smb:\\Computername\Share you can also specify a UN and pass if it doesn't work.

 

Have you got file sharing working from PC to PC yet?
