I am going down the thin client route and need a little advice.

 

I know I need my server licenses, Citrix Xenapp and Terminal Server licenses & CAL'S, but how do I license them.

 

Currently I have a schools agreement for all my desktops (which is paid annually).

 

If I purchase Server 2008 through Schools agreement, is this a one-ff purchase cost?

If I add Terminal Server license to my Schools agreement, is this a yearly charge

If I add Terminal Server CAL to my schools agreement, is this also a yearly charge

No I don't believe so - it's just tied to the box

No - one-off (but I believe it's a named user)

No, yearly (or every 3 years depending on how you renew the schools agreement)

You can still buy them outright as the usual volume licenses if you wish.

I have a schools agreement in place for all my PC's. If I were to change the PC's which have a SA in place to a thin client running a Linux client, do I still need the Server CAL (which comes bundled with the SA). Will I just need the Terminal Server CAL instead?

To use Thin clients with Citrix you need:

 

1. Server License

2. Server CALs

3. Terminal Services CALs

4. Citrix Licenses

 

If you are under Schools Agreement, the first 3 are not bought, they are leased, either yearly or 3 yearly.

 

Number 4 has an initial cost, and then a yearly maintenance cost.

Many thanks, We purchase our server licenses outright as it costs around £85 per server on the Schools Agreement. You can buy the server outright for £280 (just over three years worth of SA). I know we will have 2008 servers for more than that, probably 6-8 years, this would of taken the server license cost to £680 over that period.

 

If I'm missing something, please let me know.

I get datacenter cpu licenses for £67 instead. That way I can move the virtual machines around without worrying about the 120 day time limits for moving windows between servers. Plus the unlimited VMs.
