I have never understood why schools use RM systems and following this and other threads describing the trials and disasters that you have suffered I am at a complete loss to see why anyone uses them at all. Installing and setting up a new curriculum network is a fairly simple process (don't all shout at me at once:D, i have installed over 16 curriculum systems in the last 3 years) the last one was in the February half term 2009. I replaced a clapped out RM school share system with a new windows 2003 active directory server running ranger. the system consisted of a dell t3500 quad xeon terabyte server, 32 levono r400 laptops, 6 wireless N wifi access points, 5 24 port gigabyte network switches, followme network printing ( so easy to do just 2 lines of text in the login script and location variable set on the pc or laptop, no need for pages visual basic. if you want details please drop me a line) migrated all the pupil and staff data. all done in 5 days by myself and 1 colleague for a total cost of £23,000 which included the cost of all equipment and software licences and installation charges. job done and all workin perfectly for return to school on monday morning:D

the dell t3500 server comes with a 400 gb backup tape drive and was supplied with 5 backup tapes and cleaning tape. the backup programme used was the built in backup option in windows server 2003 and RANGER is supplied by SENTINEL PRODUCTS and can be viewed at Sentinel Products Designed for Education | Home it is NOT a RM product

If its a Ranger product its RM. RM have owned Ranger and Sentinel since Feb 2004 :(. RM acquires network software developer Sentinel Products

Ranger is indeed owned by RM and now has the right to do what they like with it they had certain restrictions when they bought it for 2 years.I remember finding that out and thinking OH NO were an RM network again.

I thought they would of dropped RM cc3/4 and developed ranger and re badged it etc by now

Search the forums - the reasons why some use RM have been talked about already.

Agreed, the RM/Ranger/Vanilla/whatever argument is way past interesting.
