I know there was a similar thread a while back (http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/11438-backup-software.html) which gave some suggestions, but I need some more details please. We currently have: 1x Windows Server 2008 DC [Would need to backup system state etc...] 1x Exchange Server 2007 on Windows Server 2008 [Would need to back Mailbox Store] 1x EduAdmin Server (Our School DB system) [Would need to back a single folder (files are stored as .db files on the HDD)] 1x FileServer [Would need to backup multiple directorys & files] 1x SQLServer [Would need to make SQLServer Backups] Ideally I would like to backup to a shared HDD on the network (which would be mirrored with another one offsite) BackupNT used to be perfect, unfortunatly Windows Server Backup doesn't do selected folder backup, it seems to be all or nothing. I spoke to a supplier for Symantec Backup Exec, the quote they sent me was quite expensive, but also included quite a few things, most of which I don't understand: 1x -Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 Media Kit 1x -SYMC BACKUP EXEC SYSTEM RECOVERY SERVER 8.5 WIN ML CD MEDIAKIT 1x -SYMC BACKUP EXEC AGENT FOR MSFT ACTIVE DIRECTORY 12.5 WINPER DOMAIN CONTROLLER BNDL STD LIC ACAD BAND S BASIC 12MO 1x -SYMC BACKUP EXEC AGENT FOR MSFT EXCHANGE 12.5 WIN PERSERVER BNDL STD LIC ACAD BAND S BASIC 12MO 1x - SYMC BACKUP EXEC AGENT FOR MSFT SQL 12.5 WIN PER SERVER BNDLSTD LIC ACAD BAND S BASIC 12MO 2x -SYMC BACKUP EXEC AGENT FOR WINDOWS SYSTEMS 12.5 WIN PERSERVER BNDL STD LIC ACAD BAND S BASIC 12MO 1x -SYMC BACKUP EXEC SERVER 12.5 WIN PER SERVER BNDL STD LICACAD BAND S BASIC 12MO 1x -SYMC BACKUP EXEC SYSTEM RECOVERY SERVER 8.5 WIN PER SERVERBNDL STD LIC ACAD BAND S BASIC 12MO What the heck is all this stuff? The quote adds up to 3500 GBP! This seems a bit excess for something that the built in NTBackup used to do for free? Does anybody have any other suggestions? Anybody used: Yosemite Backup Unlimited? INeedAUsername Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 back for workgroups..trialing this at the mo - seems to be doing the trick. oh it generates a disaster recovery plan for you too We moved from BExec for this reason £££!!! We have had it here for yonks, the updated version allowed more fancy things but the cost is sky high.. HTH STariq

HTH STariq I've been looking at the specs etc on the their website and it does actually seem to bw what I'm looking for, relatively simply, not that expensive. One question tho, you can set it to just backup specific files can't you?

BESR 8.5 is available in a 5 server starter pack at educational pricing you should not pay more than £2500 That will cover 5 servers, let you restore to file level in seconds. Restore an entire server from bare metal. Restore a server to different hardware. Restore a server to a Virtual Hard Disk image for use on a VM. Restore a single file to a sharepoint server. Restore a single email to an exchange user. Yes there are a lot of cheaper ways to do it but at least I can sleep easy without a care. THanks for that post carl - I'd seen them before but lost the link. Anyone else have any experience with this one? Looks very good from hitting their website. Also wondering if the client agents are locked or if it's possible to switch between windows and linux with the licenses as need changes.

Hi Kesomir, I am currently testing out this software - i am pretty impressed with the model as it is. The interface seems to be counter-intuitive (for me anyway) at first interaction - however after a bit of a play i found it actually does make alot of sense. Pricing alone makes this a very valid option. I am yet to test the linux agent.

Dos_Box Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I use Retrospect (EMC Retrospect) with teh Exchnage plugin for my Ex 2007 bx. Using teh proactive backup means you nver have to worry about schdueled backups ever again as it backs up new\changed file and folders as and when it detects them. As I have a tape array as well as a NAS box I can run several proactive backup tasks at once (files, mail, admin and daily). It's also devilishly simple to use and reliable as hell.
Michael Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Windows Vista suffers from the same problems as Server 2008. This may interest you and I see no reason why it shouldn't work using Server 2003's NTBackup on Server 2008.

azrael78 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I'm another Acronis advocate here. We use it on every server we have - we have some that run the Acronis agents instead of the full program - I also use it here at home. (Albeit in a much smaller capacity) The DR is top notch but there's a proviso - as long as the Acronis DR CD that it can build will boot and recognise your RAID or IDE/SATA/SCSI controllers and your network, then you're all good - if not, then you need to build something a little more robust. I've found using UBCD4WIN, adding Acronis components to it and updating the whole thing with DriverPacks to be an excellent alternative to Acronis' own DR-CD. The only real PITA with Acronis is, if you want Windows - it's good, but if you want Linux AND Windows, then you gotta shell out for Enterprise Edition - which uses Linux Agents, still good stuff though.
