Vmware product overload!

Ive jumped on the Vmware bandwagon along with most people on here recently. mainly playing around with ESXI, but there are so many VMware products its all getting abit cloudy.

 

There's a few routes we would like to explorer, firstly is virtualizing our existing kit, for which u need VMware infrastructure 3i? And do you need VMware Vcentre management server? or can you just use the free agent you get with ESXI?

 

We also want to provide remote access for staff/students, publish desktops would be great, or just applications. Can this be achieved with Vmware View or Thinapp? or are they just LAN desktop virtualization tools?

ESXi will do it but if you want HA/Vmotion you'll need 3i for the hosts and VC to manage these cluster features.

 

VC Foundation will do for 3 hosts, full VC needed for more. Full SQL needed for more than 5 hosts and 50 VMs.

 

View will do it via a web-browser out to the WWW if you want, yes. Check out view foundation bundle.

If your looking at virtualising the exsisting you're really going to want the HA features and multiple hosts to remove the single point of failure. This will require the 3i licences and ideally VCentre Manager to put together, the foundation pack is really the way to go although its worth compaing the edu price offer on individual licensing. Do you already have a SAN?

 

As said before VMWare view is for desktop virtualisation wether thin client or remote, in the foundation pack you can get a bundle with the VC included which may let you save money

 

Thinapp is an easy way of packaging applications for delivery to the desktop wether physical or virtual, it packages apps to 1 exe all you need to do is copy the file to the Pc and add a shortcut to the start menu. Pretty dangerous in the wrong hands, all sorts of software could come into the network as a single exe.
