Rebuild AD integrated DNS - Has anyone done it

Hi, its looking like I'm going to end up having to rebuild DNS on a SBS server for a client and I was wondering if anyone had performed this manover before. Specificly are there any pitfals that I should watch out for or problems that anyone has experienced with the procedure:

Make sure you screenshot the current forward and reverse look up zones just to be safe.

Make sure you take a backup of the System State which should include AD and DNS itself. The guide you've linked to looks good enough to follow.

Not need to worry .. used this procedure before and works like a charm. Allways have a rollback is your plan

 

A good tip would be to import that server into a virtual machine and migrate on test environment first.. then on production

Hi Guys,

 

In this case can I summarize the steps into the following points ?

 

1. Take snapshot the current Server / back it up to become a VM using BESRO 8.5 (for the fall back plan)

2. Transfer the FSMO role to other DC

3. demote DC

4. reformat the Server

5. Promote the DC back again using DCpromo

6. about the Primary DNS role I'm still confused what to do to make it as the Primary DNS again.

 

any idea to finish up the last step please ?

You specify DNS servers within DHCP Server. When you setup a static IP for the server, make sure you point it to itself after you have promoted it to a domain controller.

 

If you have or will have more than one DC setup with DNS, you should specify the IPs of both servers on both DNS configurations so they happily talk to one another and fully replicate.

Glad to know that the AD will automatically populated by the entry from the DHCP server.

Anyway I'm documenting the setting by screenshot on every single properties tab on my current DNS Server.
