Hi All,

 

This morning i tried to remote connect to a Windows Server 2003, but when i did an error came up saying The client could not connect to the remote computer. It was working up until friday last week. (ON HOLIDAY UNTIL TODAY).

 

Nothing has been touched

 

Im new to Terminal Services and Remote Connection

 

Dont you just tick the box under Remote Tab to remote connect to a server?

 

Do i need to buy some more terminal service licences, im fully confused

 

Any advice would be appreciated greatly

If you're getting a 'client could not connect' message it suggests a problem starting the connection rather than a license issue. I'd check the basics first, make sure the server hasn't been knocked offline by a helpfull sparky, or had it's network cable 'tidied away'. Then check that RDP is enabled on the server and isn't being blocked by firewalls.

i have checked all connectivity. firewall turned off

Can you connect to other PCs with Remote Desktop

Can you connect to the 2003 box from another PC?

@faza: It's also worth checking that you haven't reached the connection limit (2) - task manager will show you this on the 'users' tab. The message doens't suggest this but it is worth a try.

 

Also, try a reboot - magical things seem to happen when you reboot things and problems often disappear (or get much worse 8O )

u normally get an error stating your connection limit has been reached...

Only other thing I know of that denies RDP is ISA - and I still havent got this working right - i can get it to start logging me on remotely then it just terminates the connection.

@Gatt: Hence why I mentioned the message.

 

As for ISA, stick the rule at the top of your firewall rules... it's a bit tricky still but it works (ish) - I'm not sure if the RDP rules are right in ISA 2004 either (can check tomorrow maybe).

It is an online exam server, i could connect to it friday and today i cant

 

i have tried connecting to it from another work station and still cant connect

ISA - Internet Security and Acceleration Server

Acts as a Firewall, Internet Proxy/Cache - good product but the firewall side tends to block RDP by default

what would isa server be used for in a school, as its the first time i have heard of it. WOuld it be beneficial for me?

Its a firewall/webcache so you have protection from the outside world and the ability to restrict what goes in/out of your network.

@faza: Where are you based?... it might be worth you paying another member a visit and thye can show you some of this stuff... once you see it, it's pretty obvious what to click when things go wrong.

 

you would need physical access to the server to run task manager but you could use the 'shutdown' command to remotely reboot it.

Tried the users thing but i am still unable to remote connect to the server
