Well atleast according to this site How much electricity does my computer use?

 

But the guy used to be a mac engineer so its obviously true.

I remeber coming across a similar article when i was looking at comparing power consumptio of imacs with an all-in-one thin client. Have to say that some of the older imac models have seriously impressive power consumpiton figures.

 

The old white intel imac 20 core 2 duo was apparently the best of the lot.

 

The new 20" models appear to be much more power hungry in comparison.

 

But the white intel imac compares very favourably against a desktop pc with tft monitor, with the plus side of being space saving, and being able to run windows vm's under fusion.

Actually owning a Mac (for me) would use more eletricity as it would take me twice as long to do everything!

 

On a serious note, I am not so sure the Mac power consumption is accurate. A 20" LCD must use at least 40 to 50w which leaves 50w or so the for rest of system? Doesn't sound right to me.

Erm, no it wouldn't save you money. Since you wouldn't be using the mac one could reasonably assume you'd be using your PC instead. The same PC you are currently using now? So in fact owning a mac would cost you money! You'll be paying what - £400 on a mac mini to use as a door stop and your electric usage would stay the same is it is now!

 

Unless of course you are proposing to give up using computers all together? buy a £400 mac mini, use as door stop. Sell your PC. Go back to using pen, paper and books - Computer where always an over rated invention
