Roaming Profile - Initial Standard

Hi,

 

I'm wanting to give Roaming Profiles a try.

 

Now I've got my test user and test computer in test OUs so I can play with a completely new set of policies also.

 

From what I understand, when a user logs on at the moment the mandatory profile is loaded from the server, coped to the local machine, renamed to that user.

 

If I remove the Profile detail in AD then it will load the local profile with their name, if this doesn't exist it will load the hidden Default User profile on the local machine.

 

Now if I added a \\server\roamingprofile\%username% to my user and there was no local profile with their name, it would automatically load the hidden Default User profile then copy it to the server at that location at logoff and then at next logon at any PC load the correct one from the server.

 

All correct so far ok?

 

My issue is that I want some kind of standard profile to be the base of what they can then change, so a standard desktop for example.

 

Can I do this?

Create a folder in the Netlogon share called 'Default User', then copy the standard profile into that folder. Thejn everytime a new user logs into the domain that profile will be used to generate their roaming one.

First question: why do you want to do this?

 

If its for students, then I would suggest mandatory profiles which you say you already have. Roaming profiles grow, alot. For example, if you have adobe or macromedia software, it saves loads of data to the application data folder, which can be about 300mb per user. Add that to all your other applications and settings, and you've got about 500mb profiles. Calculate a class of 30 trying to log on and download 500mb each at the same time.

First off, thanks for the solution to my problem.

 

Second poster, it's not so much that I want this, it's what I've been asked to do by a member of SMT.

 

I will most likely try using the Application Data folder redirections along with My Docs, Desktop and Start Menu.

Our pupils use Manadatory profiles so i just keep that up to date, could use folder redirection but doesnt feel necessary provided the main profile is up to date.

The staff all use local profiles generated from the 'default user', but as the mostly stick to one machine, their local profile updates with any new applications they add so no need to keep this one as uptodate.

Only one person in the school has a roaming profile, and that is a pupil with sight problems she needs icons and words to be very large to read so i created her a roaming profile.

But again as she is the only one her profile just updates as and when it comes accross something new.

So sorry cant really say as i have never needed to look into it,l but would suggest you use folder redirection to save on space.
