crc-ict Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Hi all, I'm looking for some tips and info on how those of you using Moodle manage and monitor the messaging system. I have been asked to keep an eye on messages being sent to check for inappropriate content, but at the moment I can't find a reasonable solution. As it stands, the only thing I can do is generate all of the logs for particular days and then scroll through all the pages of it looking for 'Message Write' in the activity column. Very time consuming. We don't have messaging the in the activity filter box at the top of the logs page. Our Moodle is hosted by the LA externally so server access is very limited, although I have an Administrator account for Moodle itself. Anyone have any suggestions or better ways of doing it? I'd be grateful to hear. Cheers
CyberNerd Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Doesn't the moodle builtin word blocklist filter for bad language?. The main method we use is the forwarded messages. When a moodle user sends a message to someone offline the message gets forwarded to their email account. The emails are content is filtered (using zimbra). Thats a reasonable way to catch bullying etc,. Usually we just use the moodle log files retrospectively after an incident has occured. If you have direct access to the database you could probably write a custom query (I assume all the messages are written to the db).

bossman Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 We use the bad word filter with the IM at the moment on Moodle as for e-mails they too have the bad word filter in Zimbra which forwards the e-mail to a centralised account for cyber-bullying monitoring.

danIT Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 This script seems to work well, been using it for a while. http://edumoodle.veloxserv.co.uk/moodle/file.php/1/messagelog.php I cant take the credit for this, http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=27559 Quite cool, lets you search and filter based on days past, username, from, to, oldest viewed, oldest unviewed etc.... There plenty of room to make this script do a lot more. For installation I usually drop it in the Admin folder on my Moodle server, then just directly type the link.

Our LEA are implementing moodle - but it does not seem to have any kind of messaging system in it (instant, or not)? You can send someone a message but it actually sends them an email and it's rather convolouted. This is not what we are after - we wish for teachers to be able to send each other quick and easy moodle based messages rather than emails. Anyone know of any soloutions I can suggest to the LEA? danIT Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 The messaging system will generate an email message when the recipient isn't on-line. When the two users are on-line they can use the messaging system like an IM. However the messaging system is quite basic.
