Domain Rename = Anyone done it ?

Cut a long story short - I need to rename my 2003 domain.

 

Just been reading through the how to's etc etc and am going to play after school.

 

Just wondered if any edugeeks had renamed a domain and what probs they had.

 

Luckily its a primary school so only 1 DC and around 80 pc's

I have done it and it went fine. Setup a virtual test first is my advice but the whole process was pretty painless. It only gets complicated if you have Exchange in the mix.

I did this in a day, tidying up took another few days. I did however *not* have exchange installed at the time which makes the process easier iirc. The longest part was rebooting all the clients twice while the rename request was active - it changes the settings on the client without having to do anything except the reboots.

 

Things to remember are printer ports etc that may be pointing to the old domain name, time server settings in the policy for example. The single DC will also make it a bit easier. I would still be careful though as its quite a big change to the AD etc.

 

I did have to remove and recreate the tapi3 partition in active directory, but there is a command line tool to remove the old reference and create the new partition.
