Win2k Microsoft Update

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned somewhere else, but does anyone else find windows 2000 update to be excessively slow or sometimes failing completely? Windows XP update works like a charm, but I dread doing win2k now as it can take 15 mins just to find which updates it needs. Maybe it's just this BGFL proxy though...

Did you set the proxy for WinHTTP with proxycfg.exe (you'll need to copy the program from a WinXP SP2 machine, I used an MSI though)?

 

proxycfg -d -p proxy.lea.ac.uk wsusserver

 

works for me. I have it as a machine startup script in my GPOs.

 

Also, look at the logs WindowsUpdate creates. it lives in %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

@_Bat_ - By default all users should be using eduproxy.bgfl.org. For experimental purposes try changing the proxy to upstream.bgfl.org and see if this makes any difference. If it does, report it to BGfL of your findings.

 

The alternative of course (and most pratical) is to setup a WSUS server. This will ensure that any 2000/XP/2003 machines have the latest updates within your LAN which removes the need for Windows Update/Microsoft Update.
