Server 2008 Antivirus

Apologies if this is a bit of a novice question but has anyone been successful in finding an antivirus product suitable for running on Server 2008?

 

I am preferably looking for a non-enterprise solution because admittedly this is for my server at home. I know that is not the normal way to go about things but I dont have hundreds of pounds to spend on the specially tailored antivirus products.

 

I just finished clearing 180 cases of the vundo trojan from it and want to prevent any future occurrences. Weirdly I never really use ie on the server and have my network set up so that all internet access from my clients go straight to my router and don't touch the server. I have no idea how they got there to be honest.

 

Maybe it is unecessary to have any virus software on it, and this was just a one off, but I hold pretty much all my data on it and don't want any further infections.

 

Any advice?

I'm sure someone will come up with a real solution but can you not schedule a job from a workstation so at least it is scanned semi regularly?

 

i know the version of Sophos we get from our LEA will go on workstations or Servers without complaint, though Sophos does generally suck!

Avast! should work I think. It works in Vista, and they use the same codebase.

It doesn't suck. You just have to configure it correctly, as it is a highly configurable enterprise level product which installes in a default mode which often needs adjusting depending on server role. Any modern server with Sophos correctly setup will run just fine.

Although on older kit it does, let's say, drag down the performance somewhat.

From what I gather most virus scanners will do an OS check during install.

 

Ive read about people who have managed to get Kaspersky working on server08 but only after altering some reg keys and altering the programs install checks using hex editors and the like.

Was hoping it wouldn't come to that but will try avast and see what happens..

Just to correct one small point.. Avast has a server version which is different from Avast Pro.

Sophos Anti-Virus version 7+ works very well with Server 2008 without additional configuration. Our main Console works on it too!

Im going to have a bash at Sophos although a little apprehensive considering some of the comments I've seen here!

 

As I mentioned this is for my server box at home and wanted to avoid enterprise stuff and see if there were any 'home' solutions available. Will try NOD32, Im a big fan of ESET and really like their antivirus suites.

 

From what I've tried so far though, it looks like 'alterations' need to be made to get most products working on 08. Shame.
