Hi Guys,

 

Just had a meeting with my Business Manager today at the school and she wanted to know if you can get the SIMS application on a handheld device ? Can you?

 

I know alot of schools use a Tablet PC's with SIMS.

 

Anyone?

expensive route, but could use sims webparts, these use standard web browser so could access it on iphone or the internet enabled device

I think it's part of Lesson Monitor, which is a module we just bought. It allows us to take class registers, for the actual lessons during the day...we've always taken them on paper, so putting them online is going to save a lot of time and be very powerful when it comes to reporting time.

SIMS Mobile is one option and the SIMS web parts or the full Learning Gateway would be another.

 

Tablet PCs, laptops or netbooks are another option I've seen being used, which SIMS should work on as on any other computer. It sounds like you're after having it on a PDA though so the Mobile module, or Learning Gateway would be your best option.

The full SIMS app works for us on ipad, androids, linuxes, osx and win mobile using Citrix as a go-between layer.

Excellent, that may mean we could go down the tablet route quite easily. Especially seeing as our experience with an iPad 2 the other day, can be easily enough rectified using a pac file. I'm sure though that our head of PE said that using this was a bit slow, possible?

We trialed groupcall emerge - was brilliant and our staff who were on the trial loved it!

They Emerge is adding support for Andriod and WP7 etc. SIMS Mobile is dead.

@dazzd88 - SLG is great for end users, though costly and a lot to manage i'd thing for just handheld usage.

Emerge works really, we have 3 at the moment and looking to expand soon, see the sticky thread about it. Plus it's not as expensive, though at the mo' has less features and is limited to iDevices.

Advanced / Admin users will always need the desktop app, so a citrix solution is worth considering for full portability.

Citrix Xenapp is worth considering in it's own right, it's not just SIMS applications that it gives remote web access to - anything that you can run on a terminal server you can provide a link to on your website via the secure portal.There's plenty of discussion about how thin client can save on administrative and hardware costs, as well as support a ubiquity of home user equipment with diverse operating system setups. If your already thinking of going down the thin client route to save on hardware costs, it would make a lot of sense to invest time/money in that and run the full SIMS client rather than a cut down version and then get stumped when SLT present you with a device that isn't compatible.
