Create User DSN has failed

Trying to install FMS on a workstation. After running the FMSApplicationSetup.exe and connecting to the FMSConnect.ini file I can't access FMS, I just receive "Create user DSN failed".

 

What does this mean and how can I fix it??

Either need to install SQL Native Client (get it from microsoft website) or BDE (it's on the old FMS CD).

This is due to the SIMS_FMS_DATABASE entry with SQL Native Client not being installed, and is caused by the BDE not being installed correctly on the workstation

 

 

FIX 1

This can be added manually in Start | Run | type odbcad32.

 

 

In User DSN tab, Add Driver name as SQL Native Client

The name is SIMS_FMS_DATABASE

 

 

If SQL Native Client does not appear in the list to select then please download and install SQL Server Native Client from Download details: Feature Pack for SQL Server 2005 Feb 2007

 

 

(If for any reason you are unable to install the Native Client, please ensure Windows Installer 4.5 has been installed first)

 

 

FIX 2

Browse any of the FMS Installation disks, and run Setup1.exe from the DISK 1 folder under BDE. If you do not have a disk, please contact the Service Desk for the BDE settings. Once received, extract to a folder on C:\ and run the Setup1.exe from the DISK1 folder

 

 

FIX 3

This error can occur when the minimum hardware/software specifications have not been met on the machine being installed. In one case, this was due to the fact the Windows XP Service Pack 2 had not been installed on the machine. Also apply all windows updates and then re-running the client installation.

Remove SIMS Infrastructure and then re-install by running SIMSinst.exe

Sorry to update such an old post, but hopefully it will help some people.

 

Since we upgraded to SQL 2008R2 we always have trouble running FMS - the problem is if you install SQL native client for 2008 it will not work. You need SQL native client for sql 2005, than it work al fine.

If you just install FMS with the FMSInst.exe installer, it will install all the required prerequisites by itself including the SQL 2005 Native Client.

Appologies to re-re update such an old post.  I've having this issue recently, and cannot for the life of me get past it.

Everything I try doesnt work, the sqlncli wont install on a Windows 11 Surface Laptop 4

Anyone encountered this recently and got a fix?

I had this issue a few months back and it was caused by Sophos blocking the .exe from decompiling on the the workstation. Are you able to turn off the AV software whilst you deploy it as a test?

I figured it out in the end.  It was... wait for it...  .net3.5 🫣

We've recently stopped installing Impero, which pulled this down as part of the install, once I enabled .net3.5, disabled Sophos EP and reinstalled, it all went swimmingly.

 

I suspect the SQL Native Client needs this, as that was where the error was pointing, and couldnt get it to install.

 

Lesson learned, look for the simple things before you delve into the complicated....
