Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP: Server Administrator) - Anyone done it?

I'm looking to get a certification under my belt and have been looking around at some courses.

 

I emailed my local university about doing the MCSE course that they were advertising on their website. Here's my response:

The MCSA and the related modules we used to offer are no longer offered. We now offer a Certificate in Professional Studies (CPS) in Network Administration which will prepare you to take the new certification; Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP: Server Administrator) exams. To prepare you for the MCITP Server Administrator exams you will need to take the following modules in this order:

 

Windows Clients Operating System

Network Infrastructure

Active Directory

Each course costs £450

Now, i've not heard of the MCITP before . . How does it stand up against the MCSE ?

although the 2003 and 2008 paths are not a perfect match the SA qual is the equilivent of the MCSA. Might be worthwhile doing the mcsa and then an upgrade exam.

Hey dude, self study? Why waste money on a course!! Save your self a hell of alot and do it at home or after work.

 

CertForums will offer alot of advise.

 

MCTIP is next line of microsoft exams. 2003 exams will be around apprently for another few years yet before being retired.

 

Best to do MCSA then upgrade, Or MCSE. (Only one upgrade exam)

 

Anyway have a look at that forum, plenty of info on there.

I get distracted with self study though.

If i was going to a college/uni i'd have more motivation to actually do the required studying.

try the testout stuff, is more engaging than having someone reading a book to you. Cheaper too.

Trainsignal are also very good for video training.

 

Unless you aren't looking to go with W2k8/Vista/Win7 in the foreseeable future, I'd go with the NextGen track.

 

You start off with the MCTS exams (Certified Technology Specialist), then can do the MCITP (Certified IT Professional) exam for Server Admin. An additional MCTS exam, and the Enterprise Administration exam, gets you the "top" MCITP cert.

 

The local uni deal sounds a bit off to me - that money could be better spent getting training materials based around the actual syllabus instead of vaguely in-line.

 

I should be sitting the MCTS:AD exam in the next month or so, and I much prefer the cert set up for NextGen than the older MCSE tracks.
