Computers are freezing

I realy appreciate your helps in advance.

 

About 40-50 workstations randomly freeze every day. This happens for any computers. It takes from 1 to 10 minutes to unfreeze. This happens with any type of software from MS Office Word to ProDesktop and also for any user. Also when workstations freeze they lose network connection too.

 

After our troubleshoots I have realised one thing: If I unplug network cable and wait for a few seconds then plug it back the workstations become normal. However for few workstations this takes longer.

 

We have checked the switches and they look fine. There is no bandwidth issue. We have also checked event logs for workstations and couldn't find any abnormal error logs. Only one error which is AutoExNT appearing regularly in logs. But we have this error in all workstations in the school.

 

I have replaced the network cables and their network points too. However it didn't make difference.

Possibly a loopback, have a hunt round a see if you have a network cable plugged in from one socket to another. Also check you've got Spanning Tree Protocol enabled on all your switches, there may be one or two switches with this disabled.

Can you tell me if you have Sophos installed?

Yes, I had something like this when I pushed out a newer version of Sophos. I had to prevent the clients from scanning remote files (Pointless anyway, given that AV is also on the servers!)

yes we have sophos installed.

We have a shared desktop and startmenu.

We found that if we left users with read-write access to these folders, then every so often the machines would try to update them, and this meant that a freeze would go around a room, locking up each machine.

The way to stop it was to make the folders read-only for all users.
