Good NAS type distro ?

I'm looking to set up a new fileserver to replace the tired old 17gb we currently use. But I am unsure as to what would be a good distro to use, yes you can say try them all but I've got to get the serial numbers of all our laptops instead

 

I want something that will interact with the windows 2000 server file permissions. I also want something that will allow ftp for possible use in the future. I guess most of them will do that although I think I noticed Free NAS didn't interact with windows.

Depends if it is just going to be a NAS box, or whether it will suffer from extras being added.

 

I've been looking for an excuse to play with Openfiler - http://www.openfiler.com - but it may be OTT for your needs.

 

Alternatively grab your favourite (i.e one you have most experience with) distro and do a minimal install.

FreeNAS based on FreeBSD 6. Includes Windows authentication (does work, we did this last week ), software RAID, Samba/FTP, web interface. It's possible to have it up & running in 10mins.

Hardware wise. A fairly standard PC with GigE and lots of big SATA disks.

 

Software wise, I'd be tempted to roll my own. + Samba + ProFTPd should be fine.

 

I know you made a point of supporting windows ACLs. The best way to do that is to enable extended attribute support on the filesystem.
