park_bench Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Hey, Hope someone can be a life saver... I want to print multiple documents without opening each document (word documents but actually saved with the .xml extension). I have tried dragging the documents onto a printer icon, but jut get an error and no prints and I don't have the print option in the context menu within Windows Explorer or Word's Open diallogue box. I am using XP and MS Off2003. Has anybody got any suggestions please?
kmount Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Sounds like something we did recently with SIMS reports coming out as XML and having to mass print them? We just bulk renamed them from .xml to .doc and printed them all that way.
OutToLunch Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 (edited) I use the free version of PrintConductor - http://www.print-conductor.com/features_pc.htm Life saver at the end of year when I try to be helpful by churning out the network folder full of individual Word docs for annual reports. Also works nicely with PDF etc. Edited December 17, 2008 by OutToLunch Fix link
ChrisH Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I have have been doing something similar recently. I found a macro to merge all the documents in a folder. It also puts a page break at the bottom of each. You could do this then just open one document.

OutToLunch Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Whoops, missed that in the OP, read Word documents. Sorry! Is it just refusing to add .xml to the queue, or is it adding but failing to print? It definitely prints Word docs so if the XML docs are just Word docs with a .xml extension a quick ren *.xml *.doc would fix it before printing?
kmount Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Didn't try it, just looked through the blurb with it. Quick rename is all we use and then r/click print.
kmount Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 It was amusing to watch the word open/close! Mind you, it was saving someone's bacon on reporting so it was OK !!
park_bench Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 Alternatively, what is the quickest way to rename a batch of files with .xml extension to .doc Is it an easy batch file? Thanks for your help.

If your not bothered about what the file names end up being (Copy them all first) select all right click > rename. it will do them all with the file name numbered.

Cheers Ideally, I'd keep the filenames intact... (no pleasing some people, eh?) EDIT: You can't do a mass change of fileextensions using F2 - it changes the name but retains the extension. stratisphere Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 We came across this exact issue. I cheated and created a "Print" option in the context menu for XML files. He's the issue on our job tracking system: 0000540: Setup Profile to allow Context & print for XML files - Mantis 1
