Web based remote access solution for students

I wondered since this post:

if there are any new kids on the block so to speak with regards an easy to set-up web-based remote access solution to allow staff/students to access their H:\ drive files.

 

I've got a VPN working through one of our servers which allows me to connect to the network and either map a drive or use VNC to get on to my workstation. But it seems a bit clunky...instructions for uses in how to set up the VPN then a further set of instructions or a batch file to map a drive..not sure students/staff could cope....and how secure is all this?
