Unable to detect new HDD

After a Macbook (which wasn't dropped... hmm) came in with un readable HDD we have purchased a new Hdd and installed it in to the laptop. anyway when booting the mac with OS installer in it fails to find HDD,

help im not mac savvy

If you're booting off the CD, have you gone to Disk Utility and formatted the drive?

The drive is not visible in Disk Utility

Was the other drive not present in disk utility as well?

its a macbook i have to remove the old drive to install this one

If netiher drive could be seen, it might not be the HDD at fault, but the controller

The Hitachi disk diagnostic program told us that the drive was goosed when we tried it in anotehr machine.
