Petrol (at the pumps) has dropped by 25% since its highest point in the summer.

 

But the cost of petrol (by the barrell) is over 50% of its price in the summer.

 

Nearly 70p in the £1 goes to the government through fuel duty and VAT.

 

And the pound sterling is only worth 75% of what it was last year; we pay for oil in dollars.

 

None of this changes the fact that fuel has not gone up by more than inflation; it's actually come down!!!

 

Perhaps it could be cheaper but that's not what you said!

Every year since 1993 the price has gone up at the pumps above 'natural' inflation, late 2008 is the exception, due to the collapse of the crude oil price. Even then we are paying more than what it should be (in line with the crude cost)!

Err, no, not by a long way.

 

Turn out at UK general elections has averaged 74% in the past 60 years (numbers from the electoral commission)

 

Although it is lower this decade, it was still 61.4% in 2005

Indeed, I stand corrected - it is just local elections which have a very low attendance rate, I had thought it was both local and General.

 

Local authorities trialling all-postal pilot schemes saw turnout rise to an average of 50% in last night's local elections in England. In comparison, only a third of the electorate visited the ballot box across England as a whole.

Although you might struggle (read: die) on the M62 on a bike! So he would have to find a different route.

And to be fair, while 10 miles is doable, its not going to be the nicest journey at this time of year. I'm 5 miles from work and do cycle sometimes but its a depressing experiance in the rain
