1TB RAID 1 NAS - Recommendations Please

We're looking to purchase a 1TB minimum Raid 1 NAS - any suggestions, recommendations and horror stories?

We've just received a 2TB Buffalo and one of the disks was DOA. The replacement doesn't seem as "nippy" as I'd expect over a gigabit link.

 

Would be more inclined to DIY it next time.

Get a box, install FreeNAS, install 5 x 1TB drives and set as what ever raid you like.

Ditto on the Buffalow 2Tb NAS, tech Support useless and dosen't support Server 2003!

 

Very slow even on Gig port....

 

On the other hand our HP 320s Storage server running 2003 Storage Server with 6Tb of disk space is excellent....if you can afford one.

Yep, we use Buffalo TS's and I find them expensive for what they can do.

 

I would prefer to use DIY Kit, it would be easy to setup a decent Mobo with SCSI Card, 5 or 6 1TB Drives, and 2 1GB/s Nics teamed up for extra Bandwidth.

 

Cheaper and probably less problematic.

 

Unless you can afford the HP solution.

We bought a lovely HP DL380 G5 4.5TB NAS in the summer. Cost a bit but running lovely. Can double its capacity just by buying extra HDDs. Maybe too much for your needs/budget (cost less than 6k) but plenty of room for future requirements (...hmm....vague memory of someone once saying "640k should be enough for anyone"...)

well, you really need to know what it's going to be used for? before making any decision. I generally go with HP entry level SAN's, but they may be too much for your requirement? How long do you expect the 1TB to last? How will it be accessed?

Hp Sans and NAS boxes are excellent, not had a problem with those so far.

These boxes are excellent....and they give you the ability to expand using external MSA storage arrays, and you can choose to use SATA or SAS disks depending on your needs....overall very good boxes. Have these in many places happily chugging away.
