Explorer crashing when opening documents directly from mapped network drive

I've got an issue that doesn't seem to be effecting all the computers in school but just a few.

right the problem is if i go to a users "home folder" which is essentially a mapped drive and try to open say a word document explorer will crash and render the machine un useable until a reboot is done.

now if i go into word and select the same document from open file dialog it opens fine and the users are able to work fine.

event viewer isn't giving me any clues. so if anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated.

Have you tried disabling your security software? Are you using XP or Vista?

all xp sp2! sorry forgot to mention that. even happens when logged in as admin on those machines

Have you tried Safe Mode with Networking?

yeah tried that still the same. gonna try digging through everything now.
