DanW Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 The lovely kids keeps stealing mice and keyboard from our IT Rooms does anyone know of any products that will help prevent theft? I would use cable ties but they are a bit crap TIA Dan
AngryTechnician Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Some Kensington locks have cable retainers. You can also add your own by pushing a loop of the cable to be retained through the centre hole of a metal washer, and passing the Kensington lock cable through the loop.
timbo343 Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 A cable tie... tie it to the monitor cable, network cable, power cable and mouse & keyboard. Im sure they wont wonder off with them then.
FN-GM Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 We cable tie ours and every now and then they do go walk about. We have had 2 mice cut from the cable last week because they couldnt get them separated from the other wires
timbo343 Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 bloody hell, if that was to happen to ours, we would find out everyone who had been on that machine, and ban them all, so they would have to come and talk to us, then they would have to pay £5 to replace it. They soon learn
FN-GM Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 We used to do that, but they soon started taking them from other machines that they hadn't used. It doesn't happen as much anymore due to the room activation system
Sylv3r Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 A cable tie... tie it to the monitor cable, network cable, power cable and mouse & keyboard. Im sure they wont wonder off with them then. Same here, we don't lose any. Although, even the ones we don't cable tie don't go missing either so I guess we are just lucky.
Heebeejeebee Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 does anyone know of any products that will help prevent theft? A very, very big stick We've started to use the cheapest, nastiest keyboards and mice we can get our hands on. No-body want to steal them any more. HBJB
Kitkatninja Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 We've plastic cable tied them & metal tied them. With the plastic cable tied the students just cut the tied, with the metal tied they just wreck the kb & mouse. However the damage with the metal cable ties is less than the amount of equipment that was "taken" with or without the plastic cable ties. Due to the cost of the metal cable ties we've done what Heebeejeebee does: We've started to use the cheapest, nastiest keyboards and mice we can get our hands on. -Ken
plexer Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 We use nylon p clips, pass the cable through these and screw them in using one of case screws. Just seeing who has logged on to a pc doesn't give you a great indication. Ben
