Hi all,

Hoping someone can shed some light on this..

Students/staff cannot access the Internet on a few PC's, laptops around the school on (Windows XP SP2)

The server is a windows 2003 running DHCP.

Easily fixed I thought, checked the proxy on each PC/laptop, logged as local admin, restart, no joy.

Internal addresses do not work either (the VLE, Intranet)

Users can access the domain, access their work area/shared area, but no Internet. Can get an IP Address, same subnet as all other PC's.

PC's are only a handful and a couple of laptops.

I have rebuilt one of the PC's, the Internet works, add to the domain, the internet works, rename and run SSID, restart the PC no Internet (???)

Restart again and Internet works

Log off and surprise surprise no Internet

The image has been working fine for the past 6 months, no new updates or software has been issued, GPO has not changed.

Scanned with Sophos, no errors issues.

Possible solutions could be

corrupted profiles (we use roaming profiles)

Small broadcast storm on the network

Working on the ideas above but any ideas/suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks in advanced

EDIT - Right, rebuild one PC from an image, reloaded IE about 6 times and it seems to work. Logg of user and log back in and no Internet.

Reload IE about 6 times and it works!!

Hi,

What Proxy do you run, is it linux based or Windows ISA?

Do you sync your workstation and proxy times with your main DC?

Is your DNS up and running correctly, can you ping an external web address?

Can you ping your Proxy?

Try running HTTP Fiddler to see whats going wrong would be my advice.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Hi

Is the user able to access network resources, E.g. printers, network drives?

If so, could it be possible that the Group policies detailing the proxy settings and home page are not being applied? We had a similar issue after redirecting Application Data, and used this patch from Microsoft.

Hope this helps

Hi Dan,

We run the SQUID Server based proxy provided by our LEA (BHAM city) Its Linux based.

devices sync with the DC when users log on/off

DNS is OK, when you do an NSLookup the correct DNS is listed, however if you try and ping a website (BBC in this case) it only replies back to 2 out of the 4 requests.

I will check with the LEA on this one as they have disabled PING requests to their DNS.

I can ping the DNS server with no issues.

Will give the HTTP Fiddler ago.

Thanks for your help Dan and the pointers

Hi Maria,

Users are still able to access network resources like normal, they can print, save docs etc.

Group Policy has not changed for the past 6 months or so but thanks for the link and another route to look down.

When you refresh IE 7 (CTRL + F5) about 5-10 times Internet works??

Thanks for you advice

Hi,

Yes the devices point to the DNS (when you do an NSLookup) and an IPCONFIG /ALL

I have rebooted the proxy server but to no avail.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help

It could be a DNS issue, but more likely an extenal DNS issue rather than internal as accessing network drives and printers appears ok from what you're describing.

I would ring the helpline and get them to check it out. I'm in a Birmingham school today and haven't experienced any problems (that's not to say there aren't any however).
