help with back up drive

currently we have a hp dat 72 tape drive using 4mm dat 72 tapes, when backing up it gets to about 32gb which is uncompressed and then prompts for another tape. the options to compress does not seem to work either so im wondering can i simply purchase dat 160 - 80 gb tapes for it to then fit all our data on??

If you're backing up data which is already compressed (e.g. zip files, jpegs, files from already compressed folders, etc) then your backup software won't be able to compress it any further, hence your tapes will be limited to 36GB.

 

DAT 160 tapes probably won't be compatible with your tape drive - check the tape drive manufacturer's website before you buy.

the dat72, dds4, dds3 are all 3.8mm tapes and therefore are interchangeble and compatible in most drives. I doubt very much that the DAT160 will work at all in your DAT72 drive becuase the DAT160 tapes are 8mm wide and hence incompatible....at least on paper.

 

I would download the HP Library Tape Tools Utility from here,

this will let you download firware and drivers for that drive.

 

Make sure that you have all the latest drivers etc, make sure that hardware compression is enabled if that an option on this drive, and then try backing up again.

I agree with Timzim

 

We are using dat72 systems and are finding that for the large number of our systems we get about 1:1.2 compression ratio.

 

The only time you will see full compression is on standard documents. Video files, music files and other large files will not compress. Eaqually if you have a doc storage system that enctypts data then you will not be able to compress these files.

the software we are using is data express 3.10 sp2

looking at pc world website under 4mm back up tapes this one comes into that category

if you have a dat 72 drive then a 160/80 will be able to be used but can only be written at the dat 72 level ie 36 Gb native size.

 

If you want to use the full capacity of the 160/80 tape you will need a drive to match
