Ok I am always wary of altering permissions as I can almost hear the stampede of angry users wanting to know why they cant access their stuff.

Here's the situation: On our CC3 win2003 server, I keep students arranged by intake year with the permissions of who can access their work on the intake year folder. When users are created they go into the right intake year and their own work folder gets all the inherited permissions plus special permission so they can access their work.

It turns out that in one intake folder the users aren't getting the inherited permissions. The actual intake folder that contains the user work has inheritance applied but when I check the users individual folders, inheritance is turned off, so I guess this is why they arent getting the permissions.

Anyway, to fix this I want to change all the folders to have inheritance enabled, but if I try to change them all at once, it warns me that as the folders have different permissions (as they have their own special permission) , the permissions will be reset.

Does this mean that users will lose their own special permission and not be able to get to their own work?

I *could* go to every folder and fix the permissions but that seems like a waste of time.

Is there a better way of doing this?

Does this even make sense?

Cheers,

Mark

Right, I tested this on last years leavers and it takes away their permission.

Any ideas on how to do this without having to fix each user individually? :(

Ok I'm a bit confused again.

I guess what I am looking for is a way to reenable inheritance for the user's work folders, but not lose their own special permission. I am not sure that the utilities used in those threads can do this?

It's probably a bit late but this ttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/825751 is what Microsoft produce to do this. I've used it a few times when I've needed to correct mistakes.

Thanks for your replies.

Turns out my brain was mush yesterday, I had done a CC3 server update which had reset the permissions I use for the pupil work, I didn't get done last week fixing it as I got distracted.

Just needed some cacls commands to fix it.

Sorry to waste peoples time, don't know where my head was yesterday. :getmecoat:
