Mandatory Profiles Home folder redirection

Hello all,

 

Having a bit of a problem with our Mandatory profiles and was hoping someone might know of a solution (or at least have a different name for the problem)

 

All our pupils logon with mandatory profiles and there is a seperate profile for each year group (though all use the same base profile with different start menu items), I created a new profile this summer with new software etc set up. this tested fine and went live in september.

 

After it came into general useage we noticed a problem with re-direction of my documents for some users - apparantly at random some pupils will get an error of "cannot connect to \\file-server\pupils\testpupil check security permissions"

testpupil being the user I set up the profile with.

 

I have tried running Delprof and clearing out user profiles from C:\Documents and settings, but the error persists.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Take a copy of the ntuser.man from your problem profile and copy it to your desktop. Run regedit from your desktop and highlight the HKLM folder. Goto FILE then LOAD HIVE. Load your ntuser.man from your desktop. Give the hive a new key name (student). Then open HKLM then STUDENT. Then search for the problem path and delete it. Once you are done highlight the STUDENT KEY and select UNLOAD HIVE from the FILE menu and exit regedit. Now rename the ntuser.man in your profile area to ntuser.man.old and copy up the ntuser.man from your desktop. Logon with a user who assigned to that profile to see if the problem still exists.

tosh74 is right - what often happens is that something gets hard coded in the profile pointing to a UNC. When the user tries to work with a particular app (and possibly at logon if the path has got into their "my documents" bit of the shell folders) then it all falls over.

 

If you also use a drive letter for "my docs" then you can try replacing any reference to the UNC with the drive letter (eg if it says \\server\share\testpupil then change it to n: or whatever drive you use)

Make sure that when you set the path in AD for the user hat you use %username%...

 

If you use 08bloggsj; you'll get the error you mention when you try to copy the AD user to create a new one.

Just a quick question....

 

Is it possible to put the profile on the C:\ and then tell active directory to look in c:\profiles even though we have hidden C:\ for pupils???

I had a similar problem a few months ago and it drove me completely nuts as all i did was upgrade the XP clients from SP 2 to SP 3. I trawled no end of newsgroups for weeks until i finally found one that said i am not the only one with this problem.

 

It turns out that unless you have an empty folder called my documents in the manadatory profile. As of SP3 it redirects it to the profile used to create the original profile. Hence just had folder called my documents and hopefully it will stop happening.

Are you saying that i should or shouldn't have a my documents folder.

With SP 2 you dont need one, the folder redirects fine through Group policies without it. But if you dont have it SP 3 throws a fit. Although havent tried it with a local mandatory profile we use networked ones. But you have one so cant be that.

sorry just realised the confusion i was replying to the original question in this thread not yours. Ooops. But yep you ahould be able to do that as the c: drive is only hidden from the pupils not the system.

 

If you just want a local profile instead of a mandatory one you could always overwite the default user one too and that will generate one.
