techyphil Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Just so you know, 3SP are stopping the software version of SSL-Explorer-Enterprise and are going hardware. We've been using SSL-Explorer with a 2 user license for a few months to trial. It's gone so well that I contacted them about buying a license so we can have 150 concurrent users for both staff and students. Last time I looked it was extremely cheap and it was a one off cost. This was also part of our cheap solution to SIMS access from home. SSL-Explorer is so quick and easy to setup for the end user as well. NOW... Its going hardware based... they will continue to patch any issues with the software version up untill your current license expires. So they wont let me buy into it untill late Nov. They are looking into making packages suitable for different sized companies. The smallest setup is looking to cost £1200!!! and even then its not going to have all the features the FREE version we used to get currently has. How annoying We have only just brought a box for it to sit on as well
maniac Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Unfortunitely the people behind SSL explorer seem to be the latest case of an open source development that have realised that they have a pretty good almost unique product, and now they are cashing in. I used the community edition at a previous school which is still in place for remote access, and was considering the enterprise version for my current school as it is so damned easy to setup, and does everything you need from a web based remote access solution, including full VPN access. Shame they've decided to go down this road. Mike. 1
saundersmatt Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Don't suppose anybody's got a copy of the ssl explorer community edition 1.0 rc installer for windows have they. Been looking around like crazy but can't seem to find it mirrored anywhere. Thanks Matt
OutToLunch Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Have you had a look at the fork of SSL Explorer, Adito? SourceForge.net: adito 1
MicrodigitUK Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 (edited) Don't suppose anybody's got a copy of the ssl explorer community edition 1.0 rc installer for windows have they. Been looking around like crazy but can't seem to find it mirrored anywhere. Thanks Matt We are now using the SSL-Explorer: Community Edition. It is free and works with multiple users if you download the pre April 2008 windows installer. Download from it from sourceforge bellow: http://ftp.heanet.ie/disk1/sourceforge/s/ss/sslexplorer/sslexplorer_windows_1_0_0_RC17.zip Edited November 23, 2008 by MicrodigitUK 2
baxter Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 not happy... Was just looking at implementing SSL-explorer on our existing clustered firewalls to allow access to our file servers from home and see that the same hardware solution for one box (with 5 year instant replacement) is gonna cost 10,000 euros! Are there any decent alternatives? We're using a OSX Leopard server as the file server. (don't suggest webdav as it's a waste of time) Is Adito basically the same as SSL-Explorer? cheers, baxter
Jobos Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Can't you use the free Community Edition RC17?
baxter Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 we could, but we'd rather use something that's at least being kept up to date with fixes etc. I'm actually quite pleased we didn't go the route of buying the enterprise edition during the summer (workload meant it was postponsed) as it would have been 'fun' to explain why a system we'd only just rolled out needed replacing with a 10,000 euro hardware version!
amfony Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 i bought the enterprise edition a while ago - i dont know where that leaves us now but its just ridiculous in price the hardware replacement. but kudos to barracuda for seeing the potential lets see how it unfolds now
MicrodigitUK Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Here is the new sourceforge download location for SSL-Explorer: Community Edition http://ftp.heanet.ie/disk1/sourceforge/s/project/ss/sslexplorer/OldFiles/sslexplorer_windows_1_0_0_RC17.zip
