Infocus LCD Projectors...

Hi all,

 

Just looking for some inside info.

Has anyone had any experience of Infocus LCD projectors,specifically the

X21 XGA Projector.

Misco have a deal on at the minute with a free lamp voucher so i'd appreciate some feedback on reliability, support etc.

Can't say i've come across DLP projectors before.

In my experience InFocus projectors are first class - I've installed three of them on ceiling mounts and they've been so reliable and simple to use. Highly recommended! Because of this, I've no idea on their tech support, as I've never had to use it, but they are very good value for money. If you're interested, InFocus also make projection screens, and they're good too - we've had two 110" screens from them.

We have one InFocus projector in school and it's not great - the colours are all wrong and no amount of fiddling with the settings have been able to correct it. It was fairly cheap and unfortunately the only one we could get of the correct focal length for the room.

 

So far, not impressed, but maybe a call to their support line will improve things.

DLP is often not as good at reproducing colours like orange as LCD technology. You can also get 'ripping' (where the image does not update quickly enough and the top and bottom half of the image are from different frames) on some of the models. On the plus side you get better brightness and contrast with a DLP along with getting rid of the concerns of burn in that are present with LCD technology.

 

Given the nature of the technology involved DLPs are much better when it comes to dust and are often quieter and smaller as they require less cooling. The native resolution offered is usually lower than an LCD though.

 

As for Infocus we have a couple of them (DLPs) and other than the expected issues with colour reproduction they are rock solid. Only had one blow a lamp sooner than expected as a teacher helpfully yanked the plug clean out of the still going projector and dropped it into its bag at the end of a lesson

We're also having colour reproduction issues with an older Infocus projector... it just happens to be in our hall argh!

 

Reds come out black, Greens come out yellow etc. It may just be due to age though(I wasn't around when it was first brought)

I've had problems with Infocus projectors in the past, some eventually losing the ability to project colours correctly, one blowing buld far to regular (although it now seems OK after a firmware upgrade) and one that has had a part of the lens\light system drop into the image which has not got to sent away for repair. Won't use them again but the newer ones may have improved. Bulb prices seemed to be high as well.

We have about 8 In Focus DLP projectors, and they are awful for colour reproduction, get constant complaints about them, but as they all work rather too well I can't justify replacing them. Images are sharp and clear, just the colour reproduction is very poor! Personally I recommend NEC projectors, we have a lot of these as well, and I can't fault them. Not the smallest projectors in the world, but a pin sharp image and nice a quiet.

We bought three InFocus IN2114 DLP projectors in February 2010. We've had significant problems with them:

 

- All three of them failed within nine months. All three of the warrantee replacement units have also failed and been sent back. This despite regular dust-cleaning, etc.

- I always have to phone twice for an RMA number; the first time they promise me an email which doesn't arrive.

- For a while, they were very hard to get hold of on the phone - I quite often phoned their number and ended up speaking to a woman at a residential address in Scotland who was quite fed up with getting InFocus's calls.
