Network monitoring and restarting router

We're starting to use Zabbix in anger now, rather than just having it installed. We want to monitor access to the internet and if its not "up" then we want to trigger a restart on our ADSL router as 9/10 this resolves the problem. To do this there is a link on one of the router web pages that calls a javascript that restarts the router.

 

Does anyone know how we can call this from a script?

 

Or an alternative way of doing this...

We've discovered we do have telnet access to the router and can restart it from there.

You could try something like servers alive

 

This will monitor a site on the internet for you - either ping / page contents / ssl cert valid.

 

If an error occurs you can get it call a batch file - this could open the telnet command for you.

Our Zabbix does this for us. What we're struggling with is getting the router restarted programatically.

Depending on what the javascript actually calls, try getting zabbix to call

wget --username=foo --password=bar http://routerip/rebootbutton.htm

 

The other alternative is plugging the router into a networked pdu (or equivalent) and telling Zabbix to power off the correct socket, wait 10 seconds, then power it on again. I can think of various Heath Robinson way of doing this.
