We have a 3 year old viglen server which is running raid 5, and its now making a continous beep. Quite high pitched.

Something is wrong and I think its going to be one of its hard-drives. This isn't good because its our data server!!

Any idea's what else it could be?!

Presumably you have one disk as your redundant one, so your data should be fine. The disk that used to show no activity should now show plenty. Do you have hot swap disks? If so, you just replace the faulty disk. On the server, if you have a faulty disk its disk active light should be either red, not blinking, or off - depends on server. Even if you have to rebuild the RAID array, the fact that you have RAID 5 should protect your data.

I'm not even sure if its a hdd issue anymore. It maybe the fan/cpu or ram issue.

I've just been told that there is no money available if I need a new server!!!

I then told them that there will be no IT network then!! :D

Ive got a Viglen LX 260 at my school and had the same problem, my solution might apply to you:

Open the case up and have a look at the SCSI backplane behind the drives, there should be an 8 segment LED with either a number or letter displayed. Cross reference this number to the error codes in the manual:

ftp://ftp.viglen.co.uk/files/Servers/LX260/Manual/LX260_Chassis_User_Guide.pdf

(Pages 15-17)

Mine had '2' on the display, meaning one of the fans was faulty. Popped in a new fan and all was well.

Thanks for this. Where abouts is the scsi backpane. Is it behind the fans? Can you see it without pulling the drives out? :o

When you had to replace your fans, were both working? All our fans seem to be working fine.

Cheers
