"public" wireless hotspots

what kind of equipment can we install to allow students access to the internet with their own laptops but segregates their connections ie have to protect them from each other as much as us from them.

 

what sort of equipment, make/models, are used in public wifi? or what technologies exist that segment connections?

OOOhhh, Ruckus Wireless is a good contender for this.

 

You can have a seperate public WLAN from your main on, that routes out to the internet but doesn't allow acces to your network.

 

You can also have tickets issued on a time basis, so the kids have to be issued with a ticket if you like

apparently the tech for segregating connections goes by the name "client isolation"

It appears to me that most of the public systems are based on cisco kit.

 

Using their lightweight APs and a central controller - the 4400 series controller.

 

These can provide the client isolation you are looking for.

 

We had our wireless upgraded to this in the summer and it now allows us offer this facility.

If you want students to have internet access only on their own laptops then guest access it they way.

 

By default the ZoneDirector will block access to the subnet it is sitting in as well has the default private ranges. Client isolation is also enabled by default, this will block any kind of communication from the guest client to any other guest/client on the network.
