Help - SLR100 tape drive required

I am posting this reqest on behalf of a neighbouring school which has just suffered a devastating fire - the servers were destroyed in the blaze, but the backup tapes survived

One of the tape drives was an old one - a SLR100 Tandberg device - Does anyone have , or know of anyone who has access to one of these devices?

 

Or even another drive capable of recovering the data from this tape?

You raise a good issue here. We all have various manners of backup tapes, but what happens when the hardware is discontinued?

 

I suppose the only thing you can do is what pinemarten's doing, and ask around for someone who has a compatible drive...and hope you can catalog the media and do a restore from the borrowed hardware.

 

Or wait for one to come up on ebay.

 

Quick googling reveals this to be a 50/100gb drive using QIC tape technology.

I think Ibm still sell internal QIC tape drives with their iseries range of midrange servers. But those were designed to work with ibm hardware under the i5/OS [OS/400] operating system

 

TS is right it is a very old drive, atleast 8 years old, but then so are some of the DLT standards. Trouble is i'm not sure QIC was that widely adopted outside of ibm shops....don't think there are many windows and linux shops using QIC, but who knows you might get lucky and someone has a tandberg QIC drive or autoloader lying around.

I have had a good look around our school also in YORK for one nothing turned up:( also searched the net and couldn't find one... but checked eBay they have them for sale...
